AKURE – Six students of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, have been expelled by the institution’s management for allegedly being involved in cultism.
Prof. IbiyemiOlatunji, Vice Chancellor of the institution, disclosed to journalists on Thursday that the students are Awolo David of the Mass communication Department; Owolabi James, Political science ; Oyeniran Temitope, Nursing Science ; Yahaya Mohammed, Medical Lab Science; Owolabi Opeyemi, Computer Science, and Onagoruwa Oyinlola, Biochemistry.
He explained the varsity’s zero tolerance to indiscipline informed the disciplinary action taken against the affected students.
The vice chancellor revealed that all the expelled students were in 300 Level in their various departments.
He explained that parents of all affected students were contacted on the issue before the final decision was taken by the school authorities.
Prof. Ibiyemi said, “Their expulsion from the university was premised on their involvement in cultism after all fair hearing and due process within the law establishing the institution.
“The six students ceased to be students of Achievers University, Owo. Anybody (individual or corporate) dealing with them as Achievers students does so at his or her own risk.
“The management of the university has set up fact-finding committee to conduct a thorough investigation among the students to identify any other student involved in such illegal organisation.
“The university council and management hereby show by this effort the zero tolerance for cultism in Achievers University, Owo. The university is open to any information that are relevant for the discipline and proper grooming of the students.”
The six culprits were thereafter handed over to the police for further investigation and onward prosecution.
Meanwhile, the vice chancellor assured that the varsity had been collaborating with the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, as part of the efforts to prevent the students from contracting the Lassa fever virus that broke out in the state last month.
He said, “We have a team in the FMC, they advise us and we also advise our students on the ways to live hygienic life and thereby keeping the disease away.”
